IP classifications define the protection of products against the penetration of foreign particles (mainly dust, dirt) and water. The IP rating usually consists of two digits. The first digit is between 1 and 6 and indicates the protection of the product from foreign bodies and contacts. The second digit (1 to 8 or 9) indicates how tight the case is against moisture or water. Basically, the following applies: the higher the value, the higher the degree of protection. There is a caveat: up to IPX6, lower values ​​are automatically included when protection against ingress of water is indicated. However, both higher ratings (IPX7 and IPX8) refer to another type of water ingress (underwater immersion).
